The AirPods Max initially launched in several colors, including space gray, silver, green, pink, and sky blue. Now, a new report suggests we can expect the AirPods Max color update to accompany a new version of the AirPods Pro as soon as later this year. Go below for details.
AirPods Max color refresh and AirPods Pro 2
in his latest version Open In today’s newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that Apple is planning two AirPods updates this year. First, as we’ve detailed in the past, a new version of the AirPods Pro is coming soon.
Reports so far suggest that the AirPods Pro 2 is expected to feature a new design and support for lossless playback for the first time. There are also rumors of new “health management” and fitness tracking features, but we’re still waiting for more details to see exactly what health and fitness features Apple might be planning.
in the latest issue Open, Gurman doubled down on the AirPods Pro 2 coming sometime this fall. He points out that we’re nearly three years away from the original AirPods Pro release, “so for some early adopters, the battery may already be in trouble.” As an early adopter of the AirPods Pro, I can confirm this.
Also in the Sunday newsletter, Gurman said that in addition to the AirPods Pro 2, Apple also plans to offer new colors for the AirPods Max. While Gurman noted that he also “hopes” to see price cuts, there is currently no indication that Apple has any plans to cut prices.
Look for new AirPods Pro in the fall. The current model has been on the market since fall 2019, so for some early adopters, the battery may already be in trouble. Also look out for a new color update for the AirPods Max (we’re hoping for a price drop – $550 for these earphones is absurd).
Ideally, Apple will do more than simply update the color options when it updates the AirPods Max this fall. Over-ear headphones do not support lossless playback via wireless and wired playback. If this year’s AirPods Pro 2 added support for lossless playback, it would be an even more glaring omission.
What would you like to see in an update to the AirPods Max? Are the new colors enough to satisfy you, or do you want new features and price cuts? Let us know in the comments.
