While many fans have been hoping 343 Industries would remake fan-favorite classic maps like Halo: Combat Evolved’s Blood Gulch or Halo Infinite’s Halo 3’s Valhalla, the chances of that happening are generally considered very low. This is because the developers announced that Halo Infinite may not be remastering the map until the game’s release in late 2021, citing the team’s desire to avoid old map layouts and the belief that many of Halo’s old maps would not be a good game sand for Infinite box. However, according to new comments from 343 creative director Joseph Staten, the studio’s policy regarding map remakes may have changed.
On episode 90 of the Xcast podcast hosted by Kinda Funny Games, Staten was asked if he could explain why the developers couldn’t port Halo’s old maps to the Halo Infinite multiplayer experience. Staten replied, “I can talk about some things, but I can’t talk about other things. There are some great Halo maps…I think we all have our favorites. Guardians, Blood Canyon, Deep Pit … . There are a lot of great maps, right? I think it would be great to play on those maps again – no? It sounds like fun. I’ll make a mark on my little notebook.
This is a Very Interesting response, it seems to me that Staten is suggesting that fans might be able to look forward to a map remake in Halo Infinite. They’re unlikely to appear anytime soon — based on previous reviews, the developers will likely want to tweak and rebalance how the maps play so they’re more suitable for Halo Infinite — but maybe players will have some maps that Halo Infinite Season 2 will have Reshoots when it ends later this year.
At the end of the day, I think a map remake would be great for Halo Infinite, and I’m glad the developers might change their minds on the matter. Upgrading old maps to modern graphics and gaming standards can be a challenging and time-consuming task, but it’s something every Halo game before Infinite has done, and I’d love to see Infinite do the same. Playing new versions of fan-favorite classics has been a tradition in Halo since the Halo 2 remake of Blood Gulch, and releasing some map remakes alongside new original maps will bring some nice touches to the Halo Infinite multiplayer experience. The change.
Halo Infinite multiplayer is now free on Xbox and PC, and while it didn’t get off to a great start, it has the potential to grow into one of the best Xbox shooters of all time.
