The crown jewel of the foldable market is usually the Galaxy Z Fold series form factor devices, but in terms of sales, the winner has been the traditional flip phone form factor. Motorola previously confirmed that a “Motorola Razr 3” foldable device is in the works, and now a new report gives us our first look at “Maven.”
Evan Blass reports via 91 mobile phone The device pictured below is the “Motorola Maven,” which will be sold as the brand’s next foldable flip phone. We’re calling the device “Razr 3” because the official branding hasn’t been released yet.
The first look at the “Motorola Razr 3” showed a device with a revamped design that was closer to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 3. It seems that Motorola has ditched the “hump” at the bottom of the design in favor of a flatter one. It’s hard to see the external display based on this image, but it still appears to be larger than the panel Samsung uses, based on evidence of where the nearly invisible display is located.
One of the biggest changes appears to be the camera array. While the previous two Razr generations offered only one camera, Motorola has equipped this “Razr 3” with two sensors. These are left in the corners of the design, unlike the Galaxy Z Flip 3. Apparently, the main sensor is a 50MP shooter, backed by a 13MP ultra-wide lens, and there’s a 32MP selfie camera inside the device. Display remains at FHD+.
As for specs, “Maven” is described as a “top-of-the-line” product. That includes Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip, but it appears that plans for two versions of the device, an existing Gen 1 and an upcoming “Plus” variant, may be due to a newer, still unannounced variant. The chip is hampered by delivery delays. RAM is 8GB/12GB and storage is 256GB/512GB, depending on the variant.
The “Motorola Razr 3” will apparently arrive sometime this summer, especially around July or August for China first. “Quart Black” and “Tranquil Blue” will apparently be the first colorways.
Ahead of this upcoming device, Motorola has already announced two other foldable devices. The original Razr launched in 2019 and relied heavily on the idea that it was reviving the classic Razr flip phone design. However, when it comes to hands-on reviews, opinions are less welcome due to hardware issues and slow software updates. The Razr 5G was released in 2020 as an improvement over the original with better hardware, but stiff competition from Samsung and the Razr’s high price resulted in the least traction.
