Amazon has removed purchases from the Kindle app for Android devices under a new Google Play Store policy that requires developers to implement Google’s billing system.
Google has previously allowed some developers, including Amazon, to use their own payment mechanisms in their Android apps, rather than relying on Google Pay. But now Google is stricter about enforcing this policy, so Amazon has decided to do away with purchases entirely.
Ars Technica reported that Amazon was the first to respond to the policy, removing audiobook purchases in Android’s Audible app on April 1. Now the company has also removed the ability to buy e-books from the Kindle app and stopped sales through the Amazon Music app, as well.
Amazon isn’t the only company making these changes. Barnes & Noble announced in April that it would no longer be able to sell ebooks, audiobooks or anything else through the Nook app for Android devices. (Including the company’s Nook HD 10″ in a Lenovo tablet design.)

Both companies still offer digital content sales through their mobile sites, and Ars Technica reports that Amazon also continues to sell physical books through its main Android app.
